This is the rare first edition in the original binding published by Thomas Bosworth and Clarke, Beeton and Co in London in 1853. The book measures 5 x 7½ inches (approximately).
The original brown cloth has embossed decoration to the front board, back board and spine, and gilt letting to the spine. The decoration and lettering to the spine, though faded with the years, is still visible. The binding is complete and in Very Good condition for a book of this age.
The ‘A Key To Uncle Tom’s Cabin’ has yellow endpapers to the front and back of the book, as issued; the frontispiece is a portrait of Harriet Beecher Stowe; the original tissue guard between the frontispiece and the Title Page is still present; 595 numbered pages; and 4 pages of advertisements to the end of the book.
The pages are in remarkably very clean and overall Very Good condition for a book of this age; with dust marks confined mainly to the edges of the pages that are noticeable when the book is closed. NOTE: This book appears to have belonged to a smoker and would benefit from an airing. This is a very rare and incredibly well-preserved sequel to the classic Harriet Beecher Stowe Uncle Tom’s Cabin that was published a year earlier in 1852.
It is believed that as with Uncle Tom’s Cabin, this first edition book of A Key To Uncle Tom’s Cabin can only grow in demand and popularity amongst book collectors.
