The binding is deep green with gilt lettering and an inlay of the Pears’ Bubbles painting by Sir John Everett Millais which was originally entitled A Child’s World to the front board. The Bubbles inlay is surrounded with an attractive border in black. The spine has lettering also in gilt.. There are 30 illustrations by Charles Green R.I.
There are 160 numbered pages with very attractive decoration to the front pastedown and to the rear pastedown which has By Appointment To Their Majesties The King and Queen and with Royal Coat of Arms; an un-illustrated Title Page; a stunning black and white Frontispiece opposite the additional illustrated Title Page; an introduction by Clement K. Shorter; 30 black and white illustrations by Charles Green R.I.; and two pages of advertisements for Pears’ Soap to the end of the book.
Condition of the Binding:
The binding is in Very Good condition with tarnishing to the gilt and minute chip to the Bubbles inlay. Despite the minor faults this remains a very attractive binding to this Charles Dickens Christmas book.
Condition of the Pages:
The pages are in overall Near Fine condition but have browning to the un-illustrated Title Page otherwise the book is exceptionally clean with the pages being very firmly bound-in.
