Edmund Dulac The Sleeping Beauty and Other Fairy Tales circa 1927

SKU: ED048
Edmund Dulac The Sleeping Beauty and Other Fairy Tales retold by Sir Arthur Quiller Couch is for sale. This edition of The Sleeping Beauty Edmund Dulac illustrated book was published by Hodder and Stoughton in circa 1927 and has 15 Edmund Dulac colour illustrations.

Edmund Dulac The Sleeping Beauty and Other Fairy Tales is contained within its original red binding with gilt stamping to the front board of a fairy with wings sleeping on a pillow surrounded by roses and a basket of apples.  The spine is stamped in gilt and the back board is plain as required.

This edition of The Sleeping Beauty and Other Fairy Tales corresponds to Ann Conolly Hughey’s book ‘Edmund Dulac His Book Illustrations‘ (1995) in which she notes this book as “23k” published in October 1927.

However, there is one difference that the book noted in Hughey’s Edmund Dulac bibliography has the same binding but in blue not red.  Everything else including the number of tipped-in plates, mounts, etc is the same.  This makes us believe that this book was published in 1927 with what appears to be a variant binding, not noted in Hughey’s authoritative book.

The Sleeping Beauty and Other Fairy Tales binding is in Very Good + condition with light fading and marks to the front board, wear to the edge of the spine to the front, with slight fraying; fading to the spine, knocks to the top and bottom of the spine, and slight corner knocks. The gilt decoration to the front board is very bright making this an attractive Edmund Dulac binding.

There are 165 numbered pages which includes the classic children’s stories The Sleeping Beauty, Blue Beard, Cinderella, and Beauty and the Beast. The illustrated Title Page has an illustration of two cupids playing together. Opposite the Title Page is the Frontispiece for the Sleeping Beauty with captioned tissue guard which is partially detached.  To the reverse of the Title Page are the printer’s details. After the printer’s credits there is a 10-page Preface by Sir Arthur Quiller Couch.

There are 15 tipped-in colour Edmund Dulac  illustrations.  Each plate is mounted onto a tan coloured card, which itself is mounted onto a thick page. Each tipped-in colour plate has its own thin tissue guard with illustrated headpiece and caption for the plate.

All of the 15 Edmund Dulac illustrations are present and are in Fine condition. The pages are in overall Good condition with foxing throughout and with cracks to the internal hinges. All tissue guards are present but with a partial detaching to a couple of tissue guards and light creasing to a number. This book is complete with all pages, colour and tipped-in colour plates and their captioned tissue guards bound-in but with minor faults present.
