The original binding is a dark red-brown simulated cloth; stamped in gilt to the front board, the back board and to the spine; and with gilt lettering to the front board and to the spine. This stunning book measures 9.00 x 11.00 inches (approximately).
The binding is in Very Good condition with the binding have slight marks, and knocks to the to the top and bottom of the spine, and to the corners; but very clean and the gilt decoration extremely sharp and crisp. This is a very attractive binding.
There are 128 numbered pages, with a contemporary inscription to the blank front endpaper (discoloured and loosely inserted). The pages are extremely clean with age toning mainly to the very edges of the pages and only very occasional spotting.
There are 30 tipped in colour Edmund Dulac plates, all in a green border, each having their own tissue guards as issued. The plates are in Fine condition except the plate opposite page 54 (“She was driven away, beside herself with joy”) that has a closed tear, chips to the edges and creases. All the tissue guards are present with a very slight tear to the surface of the tissue guard opposite page 72 (no loss and mentioned for completeness). Absolutely tiny green pen marks to the bottom of page 72 and 73 noticed, that are so small and do not detract from the appearance of the book and are only mentioned because they were noticed and for completeness.
This is an exceptional Edmund Dulac vintage first edition book that will make a great addition to any children’s illustrated book collection.
