Peer Gynt First Edition Book 1936

Arthur Rackham Peer Gynt first edition book is for sale. Peer Gynt was published by George G. Harrap and Co Ltd in London in 1936. This is the first edition of the Arthur Rackham Peer Gynt illustrated book in its original brown and gilt decorated binding.

The Peer Gynt front board has a wonderful Arthur Rackham illustration in gilt and has the title Peer Gynt with the words “By Henrik Ibsen Illustrated by Arthur Rackham”. The Peer Gynt spine also has a small Arthur Rackham gilt decoration with lettering also in gilt. The binding is in Near Fine condition with knocks to the top and bottom of the spine, and the top board only very slightly loose (not structural issue and just mentioned for completeness). This is a beautiful and fresh example of this Arthur Rackham Peer Gynt binding with the gilt decoration as bright as it possibly could be for a book that is about 80 years of age.

Peer Gynt has 255 numbered pages with green and white decorated endpapers to the front and back of the book, 12 full-page Arthur Rackham colour plate illustrations each with their captioned tissue-guards, and a large number of Arthur Rackham black and white illustrations.

The Copyright Page reads: “First published 1936 by George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd. 182 High Holborn, London, W.C.1”

All pages are in overall Near Fine condition being extremely clean and fresh in appearance but with two marks to the front pastedown.
