  • Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens Rare Leather Bound 1910

    £250.00Price

Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens illustrated by Arthur Rackham, in the publisher’s, Hodder and Stoughton, original limp-green suede binding, published in 1910, is for sale. This is the very rare edition of Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens which is the very first example that we have for sale. It is listed in ‘A New Bibliography of Arthur Rackham’ by Richard Riall (p.105).

This rare suede bound edition of the classic Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens measures 6.50 x 8.25 inches (approximately).

The original suede binding is still present which in itself is an achievement.  It is faded with chips to the edges. Overall the rare binding is in Good condition. The gilt illustration of Peter Pan playing his pan pipes is still very bright and one is able to view the details in this illustration.

There are 22 superb Arthur Rackham Peter Pan colour plates. The Fairies never say “We feel happy’ ; what they say is colour plate opposite p.104 has a misprint to captioned tissue guard.

In addition to the 22 colour plates, all with their captioned tissue guards, there is “Peter Pan’s Map Kensington Gardens” to the front free endpapers to the front of the book and to the rear endpapers at the back of the book, both in black print to green pages.

NOTE: Riall in his book states that there should be 24-coloured plates with tissue guards and that there should be separate lists for both Contents and the illustrations. There are 22 coloured plates and the list is just for the Contents, there is no list for the illustrations.

Despite this anomaly, there are 125 numbered pages, all top edge gilt, that have very minimal age toning and foxing, and are in overall Very Good + condition, with a contemporary inscription to the blank page to the reverse of the Half Title Page and dated 1920.

This is an exceptionally rare edition, and possibly the rarest, of all the early Peter Pan books.
