Smithsonian Report 1856 Inscribed and Signed by Joseph Henry
Smithsonian Report 1856 with inscription in ink 'Geo Sykes from Professor Jo's Henry of Smithsonian Institution 12th to 20th 1858', the report is further written Geo. Sykes on the title page and again on page 45, all appear to be in the hand of Joseph Henry.
This would be from Joseph Henry, first Smithsonian Institute Secretary and physicist who conducted pioneering research in electro-magnetism and development of the telegraph.
George Sykes was a General during the American Civil War. The book contains the report of the Secretary, ancient Indian remains, meteorology, recent progress in physics all with text and illustrations.
The binding is original embossed cloth that is in Very Good condition with marks with some damage to the back of the book along the spine. But this book is structurally very sound with the binding and the pages all secure.
There are 467 numbered pages that are in overall Very Good + condition being foxed and age toned.
This is a very rare and collectable piece of American Civil War Americana.
