This William Makepeace Thackeray Roundabout Papers amazingly has the original publisher’s binding that are now faded with areas that show what the purple boards would have looked like over 150 years ago. The spine with the gilt lettering is now faded and the gilt is barely legible, with knocks to the top and bottom of the spine. However, the blind stamped decoration is still present and visible and it is rare to find this US first edition book with its original binding.
There are 292 numbered pages with a Harper & Brothers’ 8-page catalogue to the end of the book. William Makepeace Thackeray Roundabout Papers has been superbly illustrated throughout by the Cornhill Magazine illustrators of the day, possibly George du Maurier, Edwin Landseer, Frederic Leighton, and John Everett Millais. The wonderful frontispiece opposite the Title Page still has its original tissue guard bound-in.
The pages are in overall Very Good condition being exceptionally clean with only light age toning and a name in pencil to one of the blank preliminary pages.
